Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish oloroso.
Etymology: < Spanish oloroso fragrant (1350 as adjective designating wine; 1956 or earlier as noun denoting a kind of sherry) < olor smell (1220–50; < a vulgar Latin variant of classical Latin odor odour n.) + -oso -ous suffix. Compare French oloroso (1884 or earlier as noun denoting a kind of sherry).
1. A medium dry sherry which does not develop a covering of ‘flor’ during production, used as a basis for Oloroso (sense 2) and cream sherries.
