Etymology: As noun, originally < classical Latin olfactōrium (also olfactārium ) substance for smelling, smelling-bottle, use as noun of neuter singular of olfactōrius , adjective; compare -ory suffix1. As adjective < classical Latin olfactōrius used for smelling (2nd cent. a.d. as olfactārius ) < olfact- , past participial stem of olfacere to smell (see olfacient n.) + -ōrius -ory suffix2. Compare French olfactoire (1665 in nerf olfactoire olfactory nerve n.).
