Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oleōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin oleōsus oily < oleum oil (see oleum n.) + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare French oléeux (1611), Italian oleoso (1560; a1498 as olioso ), Catalan oliós (c1300), Spanish oleoso (1578), Portuguese oleoso (16th cent.). Compare later oleose adj.
Of the nature or consistency of oil; containing oil; oily.
