Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: olefiant adj., -in suffix1.
Etymology: < olefi- (in olefiant adj.) + -in suffix1.With early forms in -ine compare -ine suffix5. The spelling olefin is now generally used in accordance with the practice of reserving -ine suffix5 for the naming of basic compounds and heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen.
1. Chemistry. Any of the series of unsaturated hydrocarbons containing a double bond and having the general formula CnH2n. Also called alkene.The simplest olefins are ethylene (ethene), C2H4, and propylene (propene), C3H6.
