Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oleaster.
Etymology: < classical Latin oleaster < olea olive tree (see oleaginous adj.) + -aster -aster suffix. Compare Italian oleastro (1309), Occitan oleastre (c1350), Catalan ullastre (1296), Spanish oleastro (1260).In Old English used with Latin case inflections (compare quot. eOE at sense 1).
1. An olive plant of the wild variety Olea europaea var. oleaster, with more or less spiny branches and small inedible fruit. Also called wild olive.
