oleadj.

Brit. /əʊl/, U.S. /oʊl/
Forms: 1800s– ol', 1800s– ole, 1900s– ol; English regional 1800s– aul (Cumberland), 1900s– arl (Liverpool); Scottish 1800s– aul, 1800s– aul', 1900s– aal; Irish English (northern) 1800s– aul, 1800s– oul, 1900s– aul', 1900s– oul', 1900s– owl, 1900s– owl'.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: old adj.
Etymology: Representing colloquial and regional pronunciations of old adj. with loss of final -d. Eng. Dial. Gram. records forms of old without final d from many southern and midland counties. Surv. Eng. Dial. (covering old only as it occurs in certain phrases) gives a broadly similar distribution. It is uncertain whether there is any continuity with forms of old adj. without -d which occur sporadically in Middle English and also in the conservative dialect of Wexford in Ireland (attested from the late 18th and early 19th centuries). Compare also the following, which may show earlier occurrence in a place name:1600 in Jrnl. Cork Hist. & Archaeol. Soc. (1892) 180 All the lands and castles in Muscry, and first of the Lord of Muskry is demesne “lands”. First in ole Muskry, and benorth the ryver Lee.
