Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative. Compare earlier grunt v., grunt n.Unlike e.g. the cry of a cat (see meow int.), the sound made by a pig is rendered very differently in different languages, e.g. French groin groin, Dutch knor, Russian xrju-xrju, Polish chrum chrum, kwik, Hungarian röf-röf, Japanese bū-bū. With the present word compare ancient Greek ὀγκᾶσθαι to bray, classical Latin uncāre to growl (of a bear). Compare the following earlier onomatopoeic form:1721 T. D'Urfey Two Queens Brentford v. i, in New Opera's 69 Thus do's the tuneful Pig..with Wick, Wick, Wick, deplore ensuing Harms.
