Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: English Oldsmobile.
Etymology: Shortened < Oldsmobile, the brand name of a make of motor car < the name of Ransom Eli Olds (1864–1950), U.S. inventor and car maker + -mobile suffix.The Olds Motor Works was established by Olds in 1897, and the first Oldsmobile cars marketed in 1901.
North American colloquial.
An Oldsmobile car, esp. a large family saloon model.
