单词 olderon
释义

olderonn.

Forms: Middle English olonne, 1500s olderon, 1500s oldron, 1500s oldryne, 1500s oldrynne, 1500s olron, 1500s oulderon, 1500s owldron, 1500s uldron, 1600s allron, 1600s oulderne.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Oléron.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Oléron, the name of an island in the Bay of Biscay, forming part of the Charente-Maritime department of France. Compare names of other fabrics used for sailcloth and derived from place names in western France, as poldavy n., Noyals canvas n., medrinacks n., etc.The form olonne may be related to Olonne (formerly also Aulonne , Olonnes ), part of the name of several neighbouring places in the department Vendée north of Oléron; compare also French aulonnes in quot. 1611. N.E.D. (1902) recorded this word under the spelling oleron, but such a form is not supported by the available evidence.
Obsolete.
A kind of coarse fabric used to make sails (perhaps originally made at Oléron in France). Frequently in plural.
