Etymology: < scientific Latin Ommastrephidae, family (formerly subfamily) name (T. Gill 1871, in Smithsonian Misc. Coll. 10 No. 227. 1) < Ommastrephes , genus name (A. d'Orbigny Hist. nat. générale et particulière des céphalopodes acétabulifères (1835–48) I. 341) < ancient Greek ὄμμα eye (see ommateum n.) + στρέϕειν to turn (see strophe n.) + -idae (see -id suffix³).With scientific Latin Ommastrephes, genus name compare French Ommastrèphe (A. d'Orbigny 1842, in Ann. des sci. naturelles: Zool. 17 61).
