Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Ibani. Etymon: Ibani igoni.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps ultimately < Ibani igoni strangers.The people's self-designation is Kana. The form Ogóne occurs earlier in the following quotation, but probably refers to the territory of the Ogoni:1856 W. B. Baikie Narr. Exploring Voy. 436 Ogóne is called Egáne in Okúloma.
