Etymology: < Japanese obi sash, girdle, belt (1603 as Vobi in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), nominalized stem of obiru < obu to gird, be girded with, wear. Compare French obi (1881; 1551 in Middle French in an isolated attestation).The compounds in quot. 1822 represent Japanese shita-obi, lit. ‘bottom sash’ and uwa-obi, lit. ‘top sash’.
In Japanese traditional dress: a broad band of material (usually silk) wound tightly around the waist as a tie for an outer garment (as a kimono, etc.) or for the jacket worn in various martial arts. Later sometimes (more generally): a belt or sash designed in imitation of this.
