Etymology: < the name of Ruggero Oddi (1864–1913), Italian physician, who described the structure (in Ann. dell'Univ. Libera di Perugia, Fac. di Med. e Chir. (1886–7) 2 249, and Arch. ital. de biol. (1887) 8 317).

With of and in the genitive, esp. in sphincter of Oddi. Designating a ring of smooth muscle in the ampulla of Vater, which controls the flow of bile and pancreatic secretions into the duodenum.
