Etymology: < post-classical Latin obsurdare to deafen (Vetus Latina, in Augustine, 5th cent.) < classical Latin ob- ob- prefix + surdāre to deafen, or its etymon surdus surd adj. Compare classical Latin obsurdēscere to become deaf. Compare slightly earlier surd v.2
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To make dull of hearing; to deafen.
