单词 obstruse
释义

obstruseadj.

Brit. /əbˈstruːs/, U.S. /ɑbˈstrus/
Forms: 1600s obstruce, 1600s– obstruse.
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: abstruse adj.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of abstruse adj., after post-classical Latin obstrusus secret, unknown, obscure (4th-5th cent. in Augustine), use as adjective of past participle of classical Latin obstrūdere , variant of obtrūdere obtrude v. Compare French obstrus (1611). N.E.D. (1902) records as ‘formerly frequent, after obstrūsus , false reading in Latin’; Webster (1911) includes as an obsolete term. Some later examples may simply represent errors for abstruse adj. Compare obsolute adj., obsorb v.
= abstruse adj.
