Etymology: < post-classical Latin obedientialis, adjective (8th cent.; frequently c1250–1425 in British sources) and noun (11th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin oboedientia obedience n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare French obédientiel (1624 or earlier: see note below).In power obediential (see quots. a1513 at sense A. 1, 1645 at sense A. 1) and obediential potency (see quot. 1989 at sense A. 1), after post-classical Latin obedientialis potentia (a1273 in Aquinas); compare French puissance obedientielle (1624 or earlier). With sense B. compare earlier obediencer n., obedientiary n., obedientiar n.
