Etymology: < post-classical Latin obcaecatio spiritual blindness (Vulgate), action of blinding (11th cent.), already in classical Latin as occaecātiō in sense ‘the action of concealing from view’ < classical Latin obcaecāt- , past participial stem of obcaecāre , variant of occaecāre occaecate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French obcecation blindness (1486), Italian †obcecatione (1309).See also note on forms at occaecate v.
