单词 obarni
释义

obarnin.

Forms: 1500s–1600s obarni, 1600s obarne.
Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian obarnoj.
Etymology: < Old Russian obarnoj (Russian obvarnoj, (now only regional) obarnyj) scalded, boiled, short for med″ obarnoj scalded mead (1503; see also note below) < obara, obvara scalding + -noj, suffix forming adjectives. The term med″ obarnoj occurs in two early Russian–English glossaries: as meod″ obornoi in Mark Ridley's dictionary of 1594–9 (see G. Stone A Dictionarie of the Vulgar Russe Tongue Attributed to Mark Ridley (1996) 211), where it is glossed ‘sodden mede’, and as obarnoi meod in Richard James's glossary and journal of 1618–19 (see B. A. Larin Russko-anglijskij Slovar′-dnevnik Ričarda Džemsa (1618–19 gg.) (1959) 134). The Russian form obarnyj is recorded in the 19th cent. with reference to products that are boiled before being baked in the oven, but in relation to mead survives only in an undated regional (Pskov) folklore source.
Obsolete.
In full mead obarni. Scalded or boiled mead.A recipe for the drink appears in the Domostroj, an Old Russian book of household management from the mid 16th cent., but only in a late manuscript version from the 17th cent. It was therefore still being made in Russia in the 17th cent.
