Etymology: < classical Latin obsignātiōn-, obsignātiō the affixing of a seal, in post-classical Latin also the seal of baptism (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < obsignāt- , past participial stem of obsignāre obsign v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare obsign v. Compare also earlier consignation n., and later signation n.
Now rare.
1. Formal ratification or confirmation, as by means of a seal. Used chiefly in sacramental theology.
