Origin: Probably a borrowing from Norwegian. Etymon: Norwegian ome.
Etymology: Probably < Norwegian regional (Stavanger) ome smoke, smell of burning, heat haze, current of warm air (compare Norwegian regional oma (of weather) to be hot and hazy, Swedish regional (Finland and Estonia) ôm' to steam, radiate heat, smell, åm' to smell), apparently < the same Scandinavian base as Old Icelandic eimr, eimi steam, vapour (see hame n.3), although the vocalism has not been satisfactorily explained. In Orkney and Shetland use probably < the unattested Norn cognate of Norwegian regional ome (see above).
Now Scottish (chiefly northern and north-eastern).
Steam, vapour, condensation; warm steamy air, heat haze; (also) an aroma of cooking.
