Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese ō-muraji.
Etymology: < Japanese ō-muraji leader of the group chieftains (an ancient title of rank; 720 in Nihon-shoki, the Chronicles of Japan, referring to use in 6th cent. and earlier) < ō- great (see oban n.) + muraji muraji n.
Now historical.
In early imperial Japan: the leader of all the group chiefs (see muraji n.), ranked with the leader of the clan chiefs (see o-omi n.) as the highest office in the Yamato court. Cf. muraji n., o-omi n., omi n.1, kabane n.The post of o-muraji was discontinued during the 6th cent. and power shifted to the o-omi.
