Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin oneratur, nisi habeat sufficientem exonerationem.
Etymology: Shortened < the first two words of post-classical Latin oneratur, nisi habeat sufficientem exonerationem ‘he is charged, or legally responsible, unless he have a sufficient discharge’, originally as a graphic abbreviation.
Obsolete.
Formerly used to mark the account of certain types of revenue in the Exchequer, recording the Exchequer's decision that the sheriff is to be held responsible to the King for the sums due. Also: a discharge for such a sum by court order.

1644 E. Coke 4th Pt. Inst. Lawes Eng. iv. 116 The course of the Eschequer is, that as soon as a Sheriffe or Escheator enter into his account for issues, amerciaments and mean profits, to mark upon his head O. Ni., which is as much to say, as Oneratur, nisi habeat sufficientem exonerationem, and presently he is become the kings debtor, and a Debet set upon his head, and thereupon the parties peravaile are become debtors to the Sheriffe or Escheator, and discharged against the King.
