Etymology: < Afrikaans nè, probably short for newaar ‘isn't that true?’, colloquial variant of nie waar ( < nie not (shortened < Dutch niet : see nought pron.) + waar true ( < Dutch waar : see warlock n.¹)).Compare also Dutch regional (Groningen) ne?, Dutch regional (West Flanders) nee?, German regional (north-western) ne?

South African colloquial.

Chiefly (as interrogative particle): ‘isn't that so?’ In recent use also for emphasis, without interrogative implication. Cf. no adv.² 2.
