1972 O. K. Miller Mushrooms N. Amer. 159 Strobilomyces floccopus... The..‘Old Man of the Woods’ is very distinctive,..but its taste is not outstanding.
1987 K. H. McKnight & V. B. McKnight Field Guide Mushrooms N. Amer. 113 Both species are called Old-Man-of-the-Woods and are very easily distinguished from all other boletes.
1998 Wildlife News (Berks., Bucks. & Oxon Naturalists' Trust) Jan. 5/2 The grey, shaggy caps of old-man-of-the-woods (Strobilomyces strobilaceus) were reported from a few Chiltern beechwoods.
