Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ocellatus.
Etymology: Probably < scientific Latin ocellatus (1758 as a specific epithet) < classical Latin ocellus ocellus n. + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare classical Latin ocellātum a stone having spots or markings like small eyes, and French ocellé (of an animal) having spots or markings shaped like eyes (1801–2). Compare earlier ocellated adj.
