Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Oceana.
Etymology: < Oceana, the name of an ideal state, coined by James Harrington (1611–77), English political philosopher, in his work Common-wealth of Oceana (see quot. 1656), probably < classical Latin Ōceanus ocean n. + -a , ending to suggest feminine gender (see -a suffix1 1).
J. A. Froude's name for: the British maritime empire. Now rare.
