Etymology: < scientific Latin Nymphalidae, family name (W. Swainson 1827, in Philos. Mag. 1 185) < Nymphalis , genus name (see nymphal adj. and n.²) + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare French nymphalides, plural (1838).N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (ni·mfălid) /ˈnɪmfəlɪd/.

Of, relating to, or designating a large group of strikingly marked butterflies with the forelegs reduced to a brushlike structure, constituting the family Nymphalidae or the subfamily Nymphalinae within that family.The ‘true’ nymphalids include the admirals, tortoiseshells, fritillaries, and map butterflies. However, the family Nymphalidae is now often defined so as to include other groups (esp. danaids or danaines (subfamily Danainae) and satyrids (subfamily Satyrinae)) which share the characteristic of degenerate forelegs, and the term nymphalid is now therefore frequently extended to these groups.
