单词 nycticorax
释义

Nycticoraxn.

Brit. /nɪkˈtɪkəraks/, U.S. /ˌnɪkˈtɪkəˌræks/
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nycticorax.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nycticorax nocturnal bird, night-owl or night-raven (late 4th cent.; from 7th cent. in British sources) < ancient Greek νυκτικόραξ long-eared owl < νυκτι- nycti- comb. form + κόραξ raven (see coraco- comb. form). Compare French nycticorax (1754).For the Old English and Middle English renderings of post-classical Latin nycticorax , see night-crow n. and night-raven n. The association of the name with the night heron arises from the bird's call, a croak similar to that of the raven (compare quawk n.), and its nocturnal habit. Post-classical Latin nycticorax was in use as a scientific name for this bird by 1676 (F. Willughby Ornithol. 205); its taxonomic validity derives from its publication as a genus name by P. H. G. Moehring in Geslachten der Vogelen (1758), after earlier use as a specific name (in the genus Ardea) by Linnaeus in Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758).
Now Zoology.
A genus comprising the typical night herons. Also formerly (in form nycticorax): a bird of this genus.
