Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nyctiardea.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Nyctiardea (introduced as a subgenus name by W. Swainson: see quot. 1837) < nycti- nycti- comb. form + classical Latin ardea heron, perhaps cognate with Old Icelandic arta , Swedish årta teal, ancient Greek ἐρωδιός heron (see herodian n.²).Proposed as a more appropriate name for this bird than Nycticorax n., but the rules of priority require that the older name be used.

Zoology. Obsolete.

A former genus comprising some or all of the night herons; (also) a bird of this genus.
