Etymology: < classical Latin odōrifer sweet-smelling, fragrant ( < odōr- , odor odour n. + -i- -i- connective + -fer -fer comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin odoriferus smelling of (c1227 in a British source). Compare earlier odorifere adj.
1. Originally: that bears or diffuses a pleasant scent; sweet-smelling; fragrant. In later use: that has or emits a (pleasant or unpleasant) odour; strong-smelling; odorous.
