Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin odōrātiōn- , odōrātiō ; odour n., -ation suffix.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin odōrātiōn-, odōrātiō the faculty of smelling (rare) < odōrāt- , past participial stem of odōrārī to smell (see odorable adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1. In modern use independently < odour n. (see forms at that entry) + -ation suffix Compare Middle French odoracion perfume, pleasant scent (14th cent.), Middle French, French odoration action of perfuming (1540), sense of smell (1550), action of smelling (1546.)
