Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: Greek ὀδ- , -o- connective, -phone comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀδ- to smell (see odmyl n.) + -o- connective + -phone comb. form, apparently coined by George William Septimus Piesse (1820–82), French chemist and inventor of the odophone. The word is apparently not found in English or in French sources earlier than quot. 1885.
Now historical.
An instrument for converting scents or odours into musical notes for the purposes of devising perfumes based on harmonious combinations; a scale of scents or odours produced by this.

1945 E. Sagarin Sci. & Art of Perfumery xii. 145 The odors were like sounds..and a scale could be created going from the first or lowest note, the heavy smell to the..highest note... Each odor note corresponded to a key on his odophone.
1993 Scentsitivity (Nexis) 1 4 Geranium is generally considered to be a middle note in perfumery and Piesse attributed it to the ‘C’ on his ‘odophone’.
