Vögel (1830) 98) < ancient Greek ὠκύδρομος swift-running < ὠκυς swift (see Ocypode n.) + -δρομος running (see -drome comb. form). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·sidro^um) /ˈɒsɪdrəʊm/.

Ornithology. Obsolete.
