Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ocydromus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ocydromus, former genus name (J. Wagler Natürliches System der Amphibien, mit vorangehender Classification der Säugthiere u. Vögel (1830) 98) < ancient Greek ὠκύδρομος swift-running < ὠκυς swift (see Ocypode n.) + -δρομος running (see -drome comb. form). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·sidroum) /ˈɒsɪdrəʊm/.
Ornithology. Obsolete.
Any of several rails of the former genus Ocydromus, most of which are now regarded as forms of the weka, Gallirallus australis.
