Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oculus mundi.
Etymology: Probably a transferred use of post-classical Latin oculus mundi, the sun, literally the eye of the world (12th cent.), alteration (with transposition of the elements) of classical Latin mundī oculus < oculus eye (see oculus n.) + mundī , genitive singular of mundus world (see mundane adj.). Compare French oculus mundi (1765), and later eye of the world n. at eye n.1 Phrases 3j. Compare also classical Latin mundī oculī (plural) the stars.Compare also:1633 G. Mercator Atlas Pref. Historie, which is (Oculus mundi) the eye of the world.
