Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin oculātus , -ion suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin oculātus oculate adj. + -ion suffix1 (compare -ation suffix), after classical Latin oculus in sense ‘eye or bud’ of a plant (see oculus n. 1). Compare German okulieren (Goethe). Compare earlier inoculation n.R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form oculatio.
