Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French niais.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman niais, niés, nieys, nioys, adjective and noun (in falconry), Middle French niais, adjective (1210–25 in Old French as nies in sense ‘energetic’ (of a sparrowhawk), 13th cent. in sense ‘foolish, naive’ (of a person)), noun (second half of the 13th cent. in sense A. 1, later 13th cent. in sense A. 2) < an unattested post-classical Latin adjective < classical Latin nīdus nest (see nidus n.). Compare Italian nidiace (late 13th cent.), Old Occitan niaic , nizaic (13th cent.). Compare also slightly earlier eyas n.
