Brit. /nɪəˈbɪŋ(ɡ)i/, /ˌnʌɪəˈbɪŋ(ɡ)i/, U.S. /ˌniəˈbɪŋ(ɡ)i/, /ˌnaɪəˈbɪŋ(ɡ)i/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1900s– Nabingi Brit. /nəˈbɪŋ(ɡ)i/, U.S. /nəˈbɪŋ(ɡ)i/, 1900s– Nayabingi, 1900s– Niabingi, 1900s– Niyabinghi, 1900s– Niyabingi, 1900s– Nyabhingi, 1900s– Nyabinghi, 1900s– Nyabingi, 1900s– Nyahbinghi, 1900s– Nyahbingi.
Origin: A borrowing from Kiga. Etymon: Kiga Nyabingi.
Etymology: < Kiga Nyabingi, lit. ‘she who brings bounty’, (name of a) spirit or category of spirits that can enter human beings.European sources have often treated the word as the name of an individual female spirit, or of her incarnation in human form. Compare:1891 Emin Pasha Jrnl. 14 Apr. in G. Schweitzer Emin Pasha (1898) II. xxxiv. 177 I called Mpororo a ‘no man's land’, but must add..that the present ruler is said to be a woman named Njavingi.1957 M. M. Edel Chiga of W. Uganda 149 The term Nyabingi itself, as I have heard it used, is ambiguous. Instead of referring specifically to one particular spirit, inspiring different human vehicles—for example, a reincarnation of an early queen of a neighbouring kingdom—the Chiga use the term as though it applied to a category of spirits, and with no historical interest in any earlier state or condition of the spirit.1960 Jrnl. Afr. Hist. 1 294 ‘Queen Njavingi’..was in fact a medium of the Nabingi cult and had little more control over her so-called subjects than had the rulers whom Emin had left behind in German territory. In relation to Rastafarianism, this word is commonly glossed as ‘death to the white man’, but this is based on (perhaps spurious) allegations made in the article cited in quot. 1935 at sense A. 2 and has no etymological foundation. Compare:1995 J. A. Johnson-Hill I-sight i. 18 After reading a newspaper account of the Niyabingi Order of Ethiopia..Howell coined the term nyabinghi as a rallying cry for Rastafarians. Howell used the term to mean ‘death to black and white oppressors’.
