A religious cult among the Kiga people of Rwanda and Uganda, based on belief in a spirit or spirits called Nyabingi, capable of entering a human being and mediated by the priests and priestesses of the cult; a political organization inspired by this cult (see note).The cult originated in the late 18th or early 19th cent. Its priests were the main indigenous political leaders among the Kiga in western Uganda in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and organized armies that were involved in anti-European resistance.
