Etymology: < classical Latin nūtus nod, gesture ( < -nuere to nod (see numen n.) + -tus, suffix forming verbal nouns) + -al suffix1.Bellarmine (a1621, in Opera Omnia (1882) III. 140/2: see quot. 16071) refers to mental, vocal and ‘nutual’ prayer by the Latin words corde, ore et nutibus, lit. by the heart, by the mouth, and by gestures.
Obsolete. rare.
Expressed merely by a gesture.
