Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin octo, rēmus.
Etymology: < classical Latin octo eight (see octo- comb. form) + rēmus oar (see reme n.1). Compare Hellenistic Greek ὀκτήρης octeres n. Compare earlier quadrireme n., quinquereme n., and (in a slightly different sense) unireme n., bireme n., trireme n.In form octi- probably after quadrireme n. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·ktŏrīm) /ˈɒktəriːm/.
Now rare.
An ancient ship, perhaps one with eight rowers to each oar. (In quot. 1890 humorously: an eight-oared boat.) Cf. quinquereme n.
