Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with English elements. Etymons: octopus n., -ine suffix5, German Oktopin.
Etymology: < octopus n. (see note at that entry) + -ine suffix5, after German Oktopin (K. Morizawa 1927, in Acta Schol. Med. Univ. Imperialis Kioto 9 290), so called on account of the compound being first found in octopus muscle.
Biochemistry.
An amino acid of the opine group, C9H18N4O4, found in the tissues of some cephalopods and lamellibranch molluscs and also synthesized by plant cells infected by certain strains of the crown gall pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Cf. nopaline n.
