Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: octopus n., amine n.
Etymology: < octopus n. (see note at that entry) + amine n., so called on account of the compound having been first identified in salivary extracts from an octopus.
Biochemistry.
An amine with weak sympathomimetic activity, formed by the oxidation of tyramine; 1-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2-aminoethanol, HOC6H4CH(OH)CH2NH2.
