Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin octonaria, octonarium, octōnārius.
Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin octonaria, octonarium group of eight verses (1531, 1427 respectively in British sources), uses as noun of feminine and neuter singular respectively of classical Latin octōnārius, adjective (compare classical Latin octōnārius a verse of eight feet, use as noun (short for octōnārius versus ) of masculine singular of octōnārius). As adjective < classical Latin octōnārius containing eight < octōnī eight at a time, by eights (see octonal adj.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French octonaire, noun (1376 denoting the number eight, 15th cent. in sense ‘song composed of eight verses’) and adjective (16th cent. in Calvin in psaume octonaire).
