Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin obscūrant- , obscūrāns , obscūrāre , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin obscūrant-, obscūrāns, present participle of obscūrāre obscure v. + -ist suffix. Compare French obscurantiste (1832 as adjective, 1874 as noun). Compare earlier obscurant n., and also obscurantism n. With use as adjective compare slightly later oscurantist adj.
