Etymology: < post-classical Latin obrizum, obryzum refined gold (Vulgate; c1200, 15th cent. in British sources as obrisum ), use as noun (short for aurum obryzum , Vulgate) of neuter singular of obryzus pure, refined < Byzantine Greek ὄβρυζος (probably existing at a much earlier date, but unattested) < ὄβρυζα the assaying or testing of gold, of unknown origin. Compare classical Latin obrussa the assaying or testing of gold (especially in aurum ad obrussam fine gold). Compare obrize adj. and n.The α. forms are probably directly after Byzantine Greek ὄβρυζον, short for χρυσίον ὄβρυζον tried or standard gold.
