Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin nūtrīc- , nūtrīx , -ial suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin nūtrīc-, nūtrīx nurse (see nutrix n.) + -ial suffix, after French nutricial (P. Marchal 1897, in Comptes rendus de la Soc. de Biol. 4 556).
Entomology. Now rare or historical.
Of or relating to the rearing of larvae by social insects; spec. in nutricial castration, the inhibition of sexual development in workers (esp. worker wasps) employed in this task.

1922 W. M. Wheeler in Sci. Monthly Aug. 129 In other words, ‘nutricial castration’,..to use Marchal's terms, takes the place in the adult worker of the alimentary castration to which it was subjected during its larval period.
