Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French œillade.
Etymology: < Middle French, French œillade glance, especially a secret glance as a sign of affection, benevolence, etc. (1518; c1480 as oeullade ) < œil eye (end of the 10th cent. in Old French (as olz , plural); < classical Latin oculus eye: see oculus n.) + -ade -ade suffix.Apparently reborrowed from or remodelled after French in the 18th cent. More naturalized pronunciations are still recorded in many 19th-cent. sources. In quot. 1592 Ocyliades is apparently a transmission error for Oeyliades.
A glance of the eye; a meaningful or knowing look, esp. an amorous look, an ogle.Quot. 1725 represents the speech of a French speaker.
