Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Oigopsidae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Oigopsidae, former family name (A. d'Orbigny Mollusques Vivants et Fossils (1845) 367; later Oegopsida ) < ancient Greek οἴγειν to open (perhaps cognate with Sanskrit vega quick movement, Slovene vega to sway) + ὄψις sight (see -opsis comb. form) + scientific Latin -idae (see -id suffix3).

Designating, belonging to, or relating to the Oegopsida (formerly Oigopsidae), a division (now usually regarded as a suborder) of squids whose eyes have lids but no corneal membranes, and so are open to the water.
