Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nuncupāt- , nuncupāre , -ory suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin nuncupāt-, past participial stem of nuncupāre nuncupate v. + -ory suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin nuncupatorius naming, calling by name (c793 in a British source), oral, verbal, dedicatory (16th cent.). With sense 2 compare also Middle French epistre nuncupatoire (c1550). Compare Portuguese nuncupatório (16th cent.), Spanish nuncupatorio (1731).
