Origin: A borrowing from Inupiaq. Etymon: Inupiaq Nunamiut.
Etymology: < Inupiaq Nunamiut, self-designation < nuna land + -mi locative affix +-u person of + -t, plural suffix. Compare Norwegian Nunamiut (1951 or earlier).Compare also the related Nunatagmiut, Nunatarmiut (Inupiaq Nunataaġmiut, with a directional affix), which is often used to denote the same people, although it may have originally referred to a more specific group. Compare also French Nunatagmiut (1905 or earlier), German Nunatagmiut (1902 or earlier). This is attested in English at an earlier date, compare:1901 Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. 14 53 The place of birth of the Nunatagmiut is given as being inland on Noatak River, in Alaska.
