Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Shoshone. Or (ii) a borrowing from Northern Paiute. Or (iii) a borrowing from Southern Paiute. Etymons: Shoshone nɨmɨ; Northern Paiute nɨmɨ; Southern Paiute nɨmɨ.

Etymology: Either < Shoshone nɨmɨ person, people, or < Northern Paiute nɨmɨ or Southern Paiute nɨmɨ in the same sense + -ic suffix.

1. Of or designating a subgroup of the Uto-Aztecan family of languages. Also as n.Formerly called Plateau Shoshonean.

1958 S. M. Lamb in Internat. Jrnl. Amer. Linguistics 24 96/1 For Plateau Shoshonean a convenient term is that based on the word for person or Indian in these languages, which has the form nɨɨmmɨ, nɨmɨ, nɨw̃ɨ, or something similar, depending on the dialect. Thus, the family could be called Numic.
